5 Reasons to Use Energy Efficient (Green) Appliances

As of late, many people have been flocking to appliances that are deemed “energy efficient”. There is an array of benefits from switching to energy efficient appliances, ranging from environmental to financial. In fact, energy efficiency is one of the most common features people look at when purchasing products for their home. Before you shop solely for these types of appliances, it might be helpful to know a little bit more about energy efficiency and how it can help you:

WHAT IS ENERGY EFFICIENCY?

Energy efficiency can be summarized as the practice of minimizing energy use without bearing a loss in quality. Alternatively, an appliance can earn the “energy-efficient” label/tag if it uses less energy than its established competitors. To better understand this, imagine yourself transporting a huge washing machine. You could decide just to lift it and walk it to its destination, but you will be exhausted by the time you complete the task. On the other hand, you could load the washing machine into a dolly and move it smoothly and effortlessly. Now the result is the same—the washing machine has been moved to its destination. What differs here is that the latter method involves less energy, and you won’t be exhausted and gasping for your breath when all the tasks have been completed. Energy efficiency puts that same rule to work with your various utilities. You tend to get equal value and dependability as a more established item, but it uses less energy which is an advantage.

It’s important to note that there is a significant difference between energy-efficient and energy-conservation, so don’t be confused. Energy conservation is more about decreasing energy use by any possible means, regardless of product quality. It consists of changes in behavior, like deliberately modifying the thermostat, consuming less water for dishes, or even ensuring that all lights around the house that are not being used are turned off. Energy efficiency, on the other hand, is characterized by the following:

1.Saving Money

Let’s say in the corner of your apartment you have an incandescent light bulb and in another corner you have a modern LED light bulb. They both produce the same amount of light. However, the factor that sets them apart is their upfront costs at face value. The LED bulb will be a bit more expensive than the incandescent bulb. You will be spending more for the equivalent amount of light as the inexpensive, more traditional bulb. At this point, things get interesting: LED bulbs only need 10 watts of electricity to function, as opposed to 60 watts needed by the incandescent bulb. So essentially, the LED bulb is uses less power, which means your monthly electric bill for the same amount of energy will be about six times less because of the LED bulb. Six times!

The savings don’t end here, either. The LED bulb is going to likely last 25 times longer than the incandescent bulb. So, if you compare the cost of 1 LED light to 25 regular bulbs, then you begin to see where the savings emerge. Analysis has proven that all primary Energy Star appliances use less energy when compared to other appliances. This is one of the foundations of the energy efficient appliance industry. Because of the advancement of technology evident in these appliances, it will help slow your electric meter to a crawl. Similarly, updated parts like fans and compressors, the new appliance can work smarter not harder.

2. Better Results

In addition to savings, you will presumably get better results from your major appliance by upgrading it. For example, newer clothes washers can spin your wet clothing harder and faster, resulting in less water left in the laundry for your dryer to dry. Whether you are considering a new washing machine, fridge or oven, the truth is that a new appliance is a big purchase. If you choose wisely, you will actually save money when you go for energy-efficient appliances that will cut your operating costs. Furthermore, choosing an updated cooling and heating system will improve the overall airflow throughout your house and eliminate the buildup of airborne pollutants.

3. Protect the Environment

From research, it has been discovered that one can reduce his/her carbon footprint by 3,600 pounds over five years by purchasing an energy efficient refrigerator. It is a good idea to recycle your old fridge too, that way you keep refrigerant and insulating foam out of landfills. Energy efficient appliances help in controlling pollution as well. Smart technology added by the manufacturers of products like washing machines aids you in drastically reducing water consumption.  It is estimated that an energy efficient washing machine can save up to 3,000 gallons of water yearly while still effectively cleaning your clothes. Energy efficient appliances also aid in the conservation of natural gas, oil and coal as a way to achieve sustainable development. Together, the use of these appliances is important in controlling pollution. When we burn fossil fuels to produce electricity, greenhouse gases are being produced, which contribute to climate change.

4. Greater Return on Investment

Energy efficient products can initially cost more than traditional ones. This is unappealing to most consumers and makes them more inclined to purchase more traditional appliances and services. However, the electricity savings from energy efficient measures will offset the extra cost, providing an implicit return on investment when compared to the lifetime cost of a more traditional product. It is also normal for local utilities to present rebate opportunities for those acquiring energy certified appliances. Washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, and even light fixtures are examples of appliances that may come with offers for post-purchase rebates.

5.  Smart Appliance Advantage

Lastly, by connecting over Wi-Fi to a smart device, smart appliances make household tasks faster, cheaper and more energy-efficient. It is important to mention that a smart appliance will only help you save on your energy bills when you change your habits to utilize the item. For example, purchasing a smart thermostat but then leaving your heating on throughout the day won’t save money.

To help you save money, smart fridges can send you notifications if the door is left open or even let you see inside without opening the door.  Smart dishwashers are customizable depending on your needs.  Some dishwashers have options that can delay and allow you to adjust the start or drying times subject to the load; some can detect leaks and immediately switch themselves off to avoid damage and loss of valuable water.

If you are unable to meet the substantial upfront cost of these smart appliances, then you can consider purchasing smart plugs. They are cheaper and also allow you to make any electrical device smart. This is achieved by simply plugging the appliance into the adapter. A smart hub is not required to use the plugs because a good number of them can be regulated independently. You can remotely switch plugs on/off with a tap of a button or even set them to automatically come on at certain times.

Home appliances are a major long-term investment.  It’s important to consider energy-efficient versions. Aside from the aforementioned benefits, they can also increase the value of your property. It is a known fact that energy efficient homes are appraised at a higher price than standard homes with regular features.
