How Renaissance Power & Gas and The Bronx River Project are building a greener future

by Oct 28, 2020

What are you currently doing to help reduce climate change? If the answer is nothing, now is the time to figure out what you can do to help, and if you aren’t worried about climate change affecting you, now is the time to start worrying.

Climate change poses a number of threats to all life on Earth beyond just higher temperatures. Along with the rising temperatures comes extreme weather events including hurricanes, heat waves, droughts and floods. Likewise, levels of smog, soot and mold in the air will increase as a result of higher temperatures and extreme weather events. Sea-life is threatened by warming ocean waters, and rising sea levels threaten to flood a number of coastal cities. Ecosystems have shifted due to climate change, putting numerous species at risk of extinction. Read our blog on climate change for more information.

Climate change threatens all of us, and so it is crucial that we all make an effort to reduce its effects. One of the many things you can do to help fight climate change is contribute to green projects. Keep reading to learn how Renaissance Power & Gas is supporting green projects in order to help build a better future.

How is Renaissance Power & Gas working to create a better future?

Renaissance Power & Gas is an Energy Supply Company, or “ESCO,” which means that we are authorized by the state to sell electricity and natural gas to both homes and businesses in an open market. We provide a number of energy products that are carbon-neutral, which means that 100% of the carbon output created by the power we supply is offset. We are able to do this by purchasing carbon credits and contributing to various green projects.

As you know, climate change poses a large number of threats. Luckily, there are plenty of organizations that are devoted to fighting climate change and protecting the environment. In order to help build a better future, it is important that we support these organizations in whatever way we can. Whether you donate money or volunteer time; any contribution to any green project is a step towards a greener future for us all. At Renaissance, making donations to environmental projects is a regular part of our business. We are proud sponsors of a wide variety of organizations that are all dedicated to creating a better future, and by supporting these causes, we are able to completely offset the carbon output produced by our power.  You can find a full list of green projects supported by Renaissance Power & Gas on our Environmental Awareness page.

What is The Bronx River Alliance?

One of the many green projects that Renaissance is supporting is The Bronx River Alliance.

The Bronx River is about 23 miles long, running through southern Westchester and the Bronx. As New York City’s only freshwater river, it provides a slice of greenery and nature amid the urban city. Once a flourishing resource, the river became contaminated by industrial and residential waste two centuries ago.

Formed in 2001, The Bronx River Alliance is dedicated to protecting and restoring the Bronx River corridor and greenway, turning them into healthy ecological, economic, educational and recreational resources for the surrounding communities.

The Bronx River Alliance is made up of four unique teams, each of which has two elected representatives for the Alliance’s Board of Directors.

The Ecology Team, made up of scientists, regulatory agencies, and community-based organizations, leads river clean-up and restoration.

The Greenway Team, which includes both agency and community-based planners, designers and advocates, is focused on planning and implementing the Bronx River Greenway, a linear park and path for bikers and pedestrians.

The Education Team, made up of teachers, educators and scientists, work to educate the public about the river and train volunteers to monitor the river’s conditions.

Lastly, the Outreach Team, which includes business, civic and community representatives, aim to promote The Bronx River Alliance. The Outreach Team organizes events to attract people to the river, from volunteer opportunities to recreational bike and canoe trips. Renaissance is proud to support The Bronx River Alliance and their efforts to restore the Bronx River.
